Paperback. Etat : Good. For decades, historians have primarily analyzed charges of black-on-white rape in the South through accounts of lynching or manifestly unfair trial proceedings, suggesting that white southerners invariably responded with extralegal violence and sham trials when white women accused black men of assault. Lisa Lindquist Dorr challenges this view with a careful study of legal records, newspapers, and clemency files from early-twentieth-century Virginia. White Virginians' inflammatory rhetoric, she argues, did not necessarily predict black men's ultimate punishment. While trials were often grand public spectacles at which white men acted to protect white women and to police interracial relationships, Dorr points to cracks in white solidarity across class and gender lines. At the same time, trials and pardon proceedings presented African Americans with opportunities to challenge white racial power. Taken together, these cases uncover a world in which the mandates of segregation did not always hold sway, in which whites and blacks interacted in the most intimate of ways, and in which white women and white men saw their interests in conflict. In Dorr's account, cases of black-on-white rape illuminate the paradoxes at the heart of segregated southern society: the tension between civilization and savagery, the desire for orderly and predictable racial boundaries despite conflicts among whites and relationships across racial boundaries, and the dignity of African Americans in a system dependent on their supposed inferiority. The rhetoric of protecting white women spoke of white supremacy and patriarchy, but its practice revealed the limits of both.…

Paperback. Etat : Good. With a spare eloquence reminiscent of Hemingway and an insistence on divine grace even in the darkest circumstances, Lawrence Dorr writes short stories as powerful as they are profound. The fifteen new and selected stories here, stylistically and substantively rich, follow a central character through episodes reflecting Dorr's own eventful life: his childhood in Hungary; wartime experiences on the Russian front; hardship and poverty; the death of family and friends. With a subtle depth of feeling and a clear, mature voice, Dorr writes of refugees and survivors, and of the social, cultural, and religious chasms that separate them. The book's title story, as an example, follows Dorr's protagonist through Salzburg, Austria, as he struggles to survive both physically and spiritually in the aftermath of World War I.Each of these stories has its own plot, but the book as a whole offers a subtle yet powerful story line that underscores the protagonist's deepening sense of life's meaning and grace. Dorr's literary odyssey is a pilgrim's progress: from trials and anguish come hard-won understanding and hope. While war and pain bring loss -- of friends, of family, of faith, of God -- slowly a new life, a new faith, and a new love emerge, and with them a deep peace. As gripping to read as it is moving, A Bearer of Divine Revelation will speak to readers at every stage and station in life.…

Hardback. Etat : Fair. From the author of the acclaimed Pulitzer Prize-winning #1 New York Times bestseller All the Light We Cannot See and Cloud Cuckoo Land, a dazzling (Azar Nafisi, author of Reading Lolita in Tehran) memoir about art and adventures in Rome. Anthony Doerr has received many awards--from the New York Public Library, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the American Library Association. Then came the Rome Prize, one of the most prestigious awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and with it a stipend and a writing studio in Rome for a year. Doerr learned of the award the day he and his wife returned from the hospital with newborn twins. Exquisitely observed, Four Seasons in Rome describes Doerr's varied adventures in one of the most enchanting cities in the world. He reads Pliny, Dante, and Keats--the chroniclers of Rome who came before him--and visits the piazzas, temples, and ancient cisterns they describe. He attends the vigil of a dying Pope John Paul I and takes his twins to the Pantheon in December to wait for snow to fall through the oculus. He and his family are embraced by the butchers, grocers, and bakers of the neighborhood, whose clamor of stories and idiosyncratic child-rearing advice is as compelling as the city itself. This intimate and revelatory book is a celebration of Rome, a wondrous look at new parenthood, and a fascinating story of a writer's craft--the process by which he transforms what he sees and experiences into sentences.…

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER'For anyone interested in becoming a better manager' - Bill Gates--------Discover the revolutionary approach to goal-setting behind the explosive growth of Intel, Google, Amazon and Uber.In 1999, legendary venture capitalist John Doerr invested nearly $12 million in a small startup that had amazing technology, entrepreneurial energy and sky-high ambitions, but no real business plan. Today, that same startup - Google - has a market cap exceeding $600 billion.Doerr has introduced OKRs to more than fifty companies, helping tech giants and charities exceed all expectations. In the OKR model, objectives define what we seek to achieve and key results are how those top priority goals will be attained. For the first time in Measure What Matters, Doerr shares behind-the-scenes case studies to demonstrate the agility and explosive growth that OKRs have spurred at so many leading organizations. With a foreword by Larry Page, and contributions from Bono and Bill Gates, this book will show you how to collect timely, relevant data to track progress - to measure what matters. It will help any organization or team aim high, move fast, and excel.…

Paperback. Etat : Good. Winner of the National Book Award for First Work of Fiction"A very good novel indeed, with echoes of Gabriel García Márquez, Katherine Anne Porter, and even Graham Greene."--The New York Times Richard and Sara Everton, just over and just under forty, have come to the small Mexican village of Ibarra to reopen a copper mine abandoned by Richard?s grandfather fifty years before. The two Americans, the only foreigners in Ibarra, live among people who both respect and misunderstand them. And gradually the villagers--at first enigmas to the Evertons--come to teach them much about life and the relentless tide of fate.…
