Original dark blue cloth stamped in gilt on the spine. [23.9 cm.] A near fine copy… in very good dust jacket with tiny chip to head of front panel, several short, closed tears neatly repaired on verso with archival mending tissue, and sun-fading to spine panel. FIRST EDITION. "A collection of papers written by friends and colleagues about one of the few great printers of the first half of this century. Two of the papers about him were written during Updike's lifetime; four were written shortly after his death in 1941; two were written specially for the present book. The long preliminary essay is the printer's own story of his career." "An Editor's Summary," p. 153. The contributors were Stanley Morison, Gregg Anderson, T.M. Cleland, M.A. de Wolfe Howe, George Parker Winship, Rudolph Ruzicka, David T. Pottinger, and Carl P. Rollins.

Publisher's half black morocco over marbled boards (expertly rebacked to style), gilt spine lettering, marbled endpapers. Minor foxing to first three and last three leaves (mainly blanks). Armorial bookplate. An unt…rimmed and very handsome copy of this scarce title. According the RBH, the last copy to appear at auction was in 1940.The first book designed by Mr. Updike, printed under his supervision at the Riverside Press. ?Before he began work on his own account, Updike had made one book, and only one, in which he had had entirely his own way. It is a simple volume, with little that is distinctive or decorative about it, except that there is nothing wrong; the proportions of page and margins, title, size of types and composition, tone of paper and quality of press work offer nothing for obvious criticism. The book is ?An Inquiry into the Naming of Churches in the United States,? compiled by two laymen of the Diocese of Rhode Island, that is, Mr. Updike and his closest friend, Harold Brown of Newport. . . .?---G. He doesn't feel a memorial service is appropriate, buyt gives notice of what is planned…in the Church to commemorate their grandfather (e.g. an essay prize on a point of local history). "As I considered myself simply a treasurer for the fund for the rest of the family. I submit herewith an account of the disbursements which I think you will find in order". He also encloses his visiting card.
