Dan was born in Gardnerville, Nevada, on May 24, 1925, and grew up in this same small town, located in the Carson Valley just east of the Sierra Nevada Mountains Dan received his higher education at Stanford University, obtaining a B.S. in geology in 1949, an M.S. in geology in 1950, and a Ph.D. in geology in 1953.
