Contains 41 black and white photographs and illustrations, most of self-identified "transvestites" or "female impersonators". This early study of transvestism edited by Dr. David Oliver Cauldwell, who first coined the term "transsexual", examines the practice of cross-dressing in relation to homosexuality and childhood development. The books compiles a variety of essays in two parts; those by writers and medical professionals speculating on the nature and origin of transvestism and those by self-identified "transvestites" speaking on their own experiences. The former includes writings by noted sexologist Harry Benjamin and psychiatrist and science fiction writer David H. Keller. The book is notable for its focus on the lived experiences of trans-identifying individuals, taking the study out of the realm of pure scientific speculation and into a humanistic approach which engages with people who practice transvestism, some of whom identify strongly as men and others who prefer to identify as women. Though the book uses terms and scientific theories which may be considered outdated or offensive today, it is overall remarkably progressive for the time and sets out in good faith to understand what was in the 1950s an extremely taboo subject.
