This impressive volume documents the diverse treasures of the New York Public Library, including a Gutenberg Bible, the Tickhill Psalter, Washington's Farewell Address, and more than 250 others. Marshall B. Davidson was a writer on American history and culture who was an editor of Horizon and American Heritage magazines. Mr. Davidson produced more than 25 books and many articles. Among his specialties were architecture and art, but he also wrote on other aspects of American life. Among his books were ''Life in America,'' which won the Carey-Thomas Award for creative book publishing; ''The Horizon Book of Great Historic Places''; ''A Pictorial History of Architecture in America''; ''The World of 1776''; ''The American Wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art'' (with Elizabeth Stillinger), and ''The Treasures of the New York Public Library'' (with Bernard McTigue). Mr. Davidson, a 1928 graduate of Princeton, began his professional career with the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where he was associate curator of the American Wing and director of publications for 26 years. Bernard McTigue was a Librarian, New York Public Library, New York City, 1974-1981; curator, Arents Collections, New York Public Library, New York City, 1981-1990; keeper of rare books, Arents Collections, New York Public Library, New York City, 1988-1990; department chairman special collections, U. Florida, Gainesville, 1990-1993; curator special collections and university archives Knight Library., U. Oregon, Eugene, since 1993. Vartan Gregorian[a] (born April 8, 1934) is an Armenian-American academic, educator, and historian. He has been serving as president of the Carnegie Corporation since 1997. An Armenian born in Iran, Gregorian moved to the United States at 22. He graduated with dual Ph.D. from Stanford University. He subsequently taught at several universities and his work as a historian focused mainly on the Muslim world. He went on to join the University of Pennsylvania faculty, then as its provost. From 1981 to 1989 he served as president of the New York Public Library during which he succeeded in financially stabilizing the institution and revitalizing its cultural importance. The New York Public Library (NYPL) is a public library system in New York City. With nearly 53 million items and 92 locations, the New York Public Library is the second largest public library in the United States (behind the Library of Congress) and the fourth largest in the world (behind the Library of Congress and the British Library). It is a private, non-governmental, independently managed, nonprofit corporation operating with both private and public financing. The library, officially chartered as The New York Public Library, Astor, Lenox and Tilden Foundations, was developed in the 19th century, founded from an amalgamation of grass-roots libraries and social libraries of bibliophiles and the wealthy, aided by the philanthropy of the wealthiest Americans of their age. The "New York Public Library" name may also refer to its Main Branch, which is easily recognizable by its lion statues named Patience and Fortitude that sit either side of the entrance. The branch was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1965, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966, and designated a New York City Landmark in 1967. The historian David McCullough has described the New York Public Library as one of the five most important libraries in the United States; the others are the Library of Congress, the Boston Public Library, and the university libraries of Harvard and Yale. The New York Public Library has been referenced numerous times in popular culture. The library has appeared as a setting and topic multiple times in film, poetry, television, and music.
