Enrico Caruso stared at MET premiere along with Emmy Destinn (Czech soprano). Opening night crowd controlled by NYC mounted police. The opera in some ways influenced by the early 20th century structure of "through composed" since stand and sing arias are few and far between in this opera that takes place somewhere between Bakersfield and Sacramento.
