Age toning. Stated First Edition. Dust jacket with light edgewear. *** "American women's relationship with their homes has always been central to their lives. In 1980 Jane Davison published a book that so brilliantly illuminated this relationship and how it had changed in this century that it immediately became a classic. That superb, timeless work is presented here in a new edition containing more than seventy-five remarkable photographs and a chapter by Lesley Davison that brings into the 1990s the lively, insightful exploration her mother began. Drawing on such diverse and entertaining sources as family diaries, women's magazines, and popular literature, the Davisons move from the specific to the general, from personal reflection to architectural philosophy to sociological analysis, with remarkable grace. At the turn of the century, when Jane Davison's grandmother was a young bride, a middle-class woman ruled proudly over her suburban house. Overseeing a host of children and servants, she strove to make her home a spiritual sanctuary for her family. In the thirties and forties, Davison's mother reigned over a diminished, more lonely empire. The scientific revolution of the twenties had swept into the home, innumerable appliances had taken the place of servants, and the housewife tried now to be an efficient manager. Despite these changes, home was still 'a woman's happy duty.' But as a housewife herself in the sixties and seventies, Jane Davison, like many women, questioned - and then rejected - the close identification of self with house. Lesley Davison examines the surprising changes in what members of a fourth generation of women think and feel about their homes. Complemented by a rich array of photographs that reflect the changing ideals and realities of the housewife's life, this is a masterful study of the American dream of the single-family home and the economic, social, and psychological impact it has had on women." - Publisher. *** CONTENTS: 1. Ajouter au panierFirst edition of Jane and Lesley Davison's history of four generations of American women and the houses they made into homes. Quarto, original half cloth. Association copy, inscribed by Lesley Davison on the title page, "Julia, A book about homes for someone who is giving us one. With love, Lesley. May, 1994." The recipient, Julia Child was a chef, author, and television personality. She is recognized for having brought French cuisine to the American public with her debut cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, and her subsequent television programs, the most notable of which was The French Chef, which premiered in 1963. Paul and Julia Child had bought their house at 103 Irving Street in Cambridge from the Davison family, and they lived and worked there from 1961. Its kitchen, where Julia filmed her later television series, is now preserved at the Smithsonian. The inscription is addressed to Julia alone and dated May 1994, the month in which her husband Paul Child died. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Susan Shapiro. An exceptional association. To Make a House a Home (1994) is a social history of the American home told through the women of one family across four generations, combining family memoir with research into architecture, household technology, domestic service and the shifting expectations placed on the women who kept house. It grew out of Jane Davison's The Fall of a Doll's House (1980), her study of three generations of American women and the houses they lived in, which her daughter Lesley Davison carried forward by a further generation and expanded into this book. Jane Davison had earlier written, with Bob Vila, the companion volume to This Old House, the public television series launched at WGBH in Boston in 1979 by Russell Morash, the producer who had directed Julia Child's The French Chef at the same station from 1963 and worked with her for some thirty years. The book was warmly received. John Updike praised Jane Davison's "stylistic brio and sociological shrewdness," Louis Auchincloss called it a happy blend of personal memoir and finely documented sociological study, and Joan Didion wrote that she had read the earlier book three times, the last with gratitude for its intelligence, wit and generosity. …
