Encyclopaedic volume in 5 sections dealing with the elements of botany and horticulture, construction and heating of glasshouses, the composition and embellishment of the jardin paysager, parterre, verger, jardin fruitier and potager, the creation of fountains in a variety of exotic and ingenious shapes and the horticultural implements, with the inventor named where known. The section on 'hydroplasie' shows how to construct fountains in circular or gyratory motion forming shapes such as tulips with leaves, flower baskets or framed mirrors; tricks using water pressure are displayed - a chinese acrobat performs on a candlelit tablecloth, a whirling dervish dances high on a 'jet d'eau'. Both authors were associated with the Jardin des Plantes. The well-executed botanical plates were engraved by Mlle E. Taillant, some woodcuts are signed by Thiebault. 'Le Bon Jardinier', with which the above is associated, was the first garden journal to be issued in France, first in 1754. This 16th edition of 'Figures' is newly presented, the work not having been published for some years. Rare. Generally in good condition, occasional faint marginal foxing, edge of one or two early leaves marked. Signed by Author(s).
