The songs appear in the form of sheet music with lyrics. The songs are about childhood. Only one of the songs, "Teddy Bear," is about Winnie-the-Pooh and features illustrations of him. The following are the songs contained herein: "Disobedience," "The Alchemist," "Jonathan Jo," "The Four Friends," "Independence," "Before Tea," "Bad Sir Brian Botany," "Sand-between-the-Toes," "Puppy and I," "Daffodowndilly," "Rice Pudding," "Teddy Bear," "At the Zoo," and "If I Were King." A. A. Milne (1882-1956) was an English author who is perhaps best-known for his Winnie-the-Pooh books and children's poetry. In the original publication of When We Were Very Young, some of the poems were set to music by Harold Fraser-Simson (1872-1944), an English composer. All of the songs herein are set to Fraser-Simon's music. Also included herein are illustrations by Ernest Howard Shepard (1879-1976), an English artist who is perhaps best-known for illustrating the original depictions of the characters from the Winnie-the-Pooh series and The Wind in the Willows.
