Ajouter au panierEtat : Poor. Illustrated by No Illustrations (illustrateur). Book is in poor to fair condition - Green blind stamped publisher's cloth with gold lettering on spine. The covers are worn and soiled but intact. The paper is the brittle, acidic paper typical of books published by publishers such as the International Library Publishers. The free end pages are brittle and yellowed and the inner hinges are cracked and the first gathering of pages is beginning to loosen. Despite these flaws, the text is complete and relatively tight. Even though the first few pages at the beginning of the book and the last couple at the end of the book are brittle, the text is for the most part tight and less fragile. ; Four page introductory note by the translator, La Monte and a sixpage preface by Deville. At the end of the book, there is a four page press review of Eugene Sues "The Silver Cross." ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; Deville was a French socialist thinker who supported Marx's theories of the weaknesses of capitalism. Through his writings, Deville helped to introduce Marxism to a wider audience in Europe and also the United States. His preface to this abridgement of Marx's "Capital" is considered to be a masterful explanation of Marx's writing and helped to make Marxism more accessible to the public (Wikipedia) . Deville's epitome was orginally published in French in 1883 and this appears to be the first English translation intended for Americans. In his introductory notes , dated 1899, La Monte states that Deville's epitome is not intended to be a substitute for "Capital" itself but intended for those who don't have the time or inclination to read the entire work. This appears to be the first American edition of what is considered to be the most important abridgement of Marx's "Capital.".
