Paperback. Etat : Good. A murder mystery featuring Lord Francis Powerscourt, England, 1899, and Titian has come to London. So have Giorgione, Bellini, Tintoretto and a galaxy of other great artists in a major exhibition of Venetian paintings. New World money and prices come to London too, as American millionaires bid for the Old Masters. Shortly after the exhibition opens, a leading art critic, Christopher Montague, is found garrotted in his study. Lord Francis Powerscourt, the discreet society investigator called upon to look into the case, soon discovers that before his death Montague has been working on a story that could have destroyed the exhibition and rocked the London art world to its foundations. According to Montague, most of the Venetian paintings were fakes and some of the alleged Old Masters were brilliant, and recent, forgeries. In pursuit of a master forger and a murderer, Powerscourt embarks on an odyssey through the treacherous world of art dealers and picture restorers.…

Paperback. Etat : Good. A young girl stands alone in the cobbled market place of a small Lincolnshire town, bedraggled, soaked through and very afraid. Who is she? Where has she come from and from whom is she running away? No one knows or cares. Only kindly farmer, Eddie Appleyard, recognises something in the girl that touches his heart. In a drunken haze and scarcely realising what he is doing, Eddie takes her home even though his wife is a tyrant, who will believe the worst. 'Is this your fancy piece?' Bertha accuses and turns Anna out into the cold, wet night. Eddie hides the girl in the hayloft and, later, in a tumbledown shepherd's cottage that becomes her new home. Anna's arrival will change their lives; Eddie's, Bertha's and even that of their young son, Tony, torn between his warring parents and the mysterious stranger. It will take years for the secrets of Anna's former life to be revealed, but Bertha bides her time and awaits her moment, little realising the tragedy her vengeance will unleash.…

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. In an ancient kingdom, a boy and his hawk challenge the gods All his life, Tron has been destined to join the priests who rule his strange desert kingdom. When the old king grows sick, a ritual is called for to restore his health: the sacrifice of a blue hawk, the symbol of the god Gdu. For the first time, Tron is chosen to take part in the ritual. Just before the bird is sacrificed, the young priest notices that its eyes are cloudy. The bird is sick, and to give its soul to the king would be to kill him. And so Tron steals the bird away. The priests are enraged at his disruption of the ritual. Some call for his head, but others see Tron's potential. They give him three months to train the wild bird--three months to save its life and rescue the kingdom from the wrath of the gods.…

Hardback. Etat : Good. Emily Dickinson, poet of the interior life, imagined words/swords, hurling barbed syllables/piercing. Nothing about her adult appearance or habitation revealed such a militant soul. Only poems, written quietly in a room of her own, often hand-stitched in small volumes, then hidden in a desk drawer, revealed her true self. She did not live in time, as did that other great poet of the day, Walt Whitman, but in universals. As she knowingly put it: There is one thing to be grateful for--that one is one's self and not somebody else.Dickinson lived and died without fame: she saw only a few poems published. Her great legacy was later rescued from her desk drawer--an astonishing body of work revealing her acute, sensitive nature reaching out boldly from self-referral to a wider, imagined world. Her family sought publication of Dickinson's poetry over the years, selecting verses, often altering her words or her punctuation, until, in 1955, the first important attempt was made to collect and publish Dickinson's work, edited by Thomas H. Johnson for the Belknap Press of Harvard University Press. Now, after many years of preparation by Ralph Franklin, the foremost scholar of Dickinson's manuscripts, a new comprehensive edition is available. This three-volume work contains 1,789 poems, the largest number ever assembled. The poems, arranged chronologically, based on new dating, are drawn from a range of archives, most frequently from holographs, but also from various secondary sources representing lost manuscripts. The text of each manuscript is rendered individually, including, within the capacity of standard type, Dickinson's spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. Franklin gives Dickinson's alternative readings for the poems, her revisions, and the line and page, or column, divisions in the source. Each entry identifies Franklin's editorial emendations and records the publication history, including variants. Fourteen appendices of tables and lists give additional information, including poems attributed to Emily Dickinson. The poems are indexed by numbers from the Johnson edition, as well as by first lines.Franklin has provided an introduction that serves as a guide to this edition and surveys the history of the editing of Dickinson's poems. His account of how Dickinson conducted her workshop is a reconstruction of a remarkable poetic life.…

Paperback. Etat : Good. A beautifully illustrated, accessible beginner?s guide to the Hubble Space Telescope. Acclaimed astronomer Terence Dickinson and his longtime editor, Tracy C. Read, team up to explore the starry treasures in our galaxy and beyond as revealed by the Hubble Space Telescope. Since Galileo pointed his telescope at the starry night in 1609 and discovered that the hazy patch above us was not a cloud but a ?river? of uncountable stars?the Milky Way, our home galaxy?humans have been improving on ways to understand the cosmos. We have devised ever more powerful telescopes and placed them on mountaintops, far from the bright lights of cities. But the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope in 1990 was the first time we?d sent a telescope into space, beyond the distorting effects caused by looking through the Earth?s atmosphere. Orbiting roughly 350 miles above Earth and circling the planet more than 5,000 times a year, Hubble has made over 1.3 million observations, revealing the vast scope of the expanding universe beyond our solar system. In The Hubble Space Telescope: Our Eye on the Universe, young readers find out how this groundbreaking telescope gathers imagery and transmits it to Earth. This book shares what Hubble has taught us about the universe and explains its top discoveries. Chapters filled with the telescope?s latest photography offer insight into: stormy weather on our solar system?s planets and moons and dramatic collisions in space; star clusters, nebulas and the Milky Way Galaxy; the Milky Way?s galaxy neighbours; massive black holes and dark matter; planets beyond our solar system; star nurseries and glimpses of distant galaxies in deep space. …
