Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Hardcover, no dust jacket. Blue cloth cover has light bumping to tips of the boards, moderate crushing to top and bottom of spine and sunning and soiling to the edges. The pages are lightly tanned due to age, clean, unmarked and firmly bound. Previous owner's name elegantly written on IFC. This book is in near fine condition.

Folio, wrappers, 84 pp. Light soiling, previous owner's signature at top edge. Very good for this, otherwise really quite better. See scans. Large, "bedsheet" size periodical, at a turning point in its history as a fashion bellwether here in this issue. Fashion sketches are flappery and elongated, as they would indeed also be with the full advent of its art deco period in ensuing years, but this cover is prior to the unique Helen Dryden covers period, and the art and editing is not yet fully awash in deco mindset. In addition to the fashion, coooking and homemaking pages, though, there is serious fiction and full vintage illustration of it here, including Zona Gale's "A Thief in the Night", Irving Bacheller's "The Secret of Being Happily Married", Margaret Culkin Banning's "The Fortune Hunter", "The Weakest Link", by University of Michigan sports legend Fielding H. Yost, and Dixie Willson's "Little Texas". Some of the celebrated artists for these works include Clara Elsene Peck, Joseph Simont, Gerald Leake and Paul Meylan. A tour de force in the fiction & illustration department - and that isn't even the strong point for this Butterick publication, which is a living timeline in the history of American fashion. Nice. NO dust jacket. 1" piece of cellophane surface missing in gutter front cover at 3 3/8" down from top right spine edge, with 1/8" hole at middle of it (NO impact on binding (7 sites of sewn threads along inside front cover hinge); nugatory cellophane 1" tear on rear cover gutter at 3" down from top left spine corner (NOW reglued so as to be virtually undetectable; small rubbing wear at cover and spine corners; text lightly age-toned around perimeters and on text block edges: describes worse than it is, but there you have it: Strong binding (stretched only a bit at first few pages front and back, else tight); corners still sharp (NO bumps or curls); NO previous owner names; NOT ex-Library. Clean text. Solid copy. Arguably, Holiday or Birthday Gift-Giving Quality, especially, given that the book is more than 60 years-old or near 75 years-old.
