Ajouter au panierEtat : Sehr gut. 240 S. Umschlag berieben, sonst gutes Exemplar. - London is a city of interiors. It is not the easiest place for outside living; the parks of course, are pretty, and some of the thoroughfares are grand but both the weather and the general grey demeanour of the London street militate against continental-style street living. Once you are actually inside London there is a wealth of real art and invention to delight the eye and uplift the heart. Nor is it only the older London buildings which contain beautiful and eccentric interiors. There are 20th-century homes, shops, restaurants and offices that are just as appealing, sometimes if only because of their diversity and sheer bloody-minded energy. It was in the late-Victorian splendour of Wyndham's Theatre that I had the idea of photographing London from inside, and I knew that I wanted a mixture of interiors - private as well as public, and humble as well as grand. When I walk around houses like the Tower House or Debenham House or Leighton House I am amazed and delighted by the humour, the humanity and the cleverness with which everyday emotions and ideas and the small change of day-to-day living are symbolised in carving, narrated in decorated tiles, or dramatised in mosaic or mouldings. The late 19th century and early 20th century have as much to teach us as the much-respected classical explorations of the late 18th century. Learning from the past, discovering and rediscovering earlier architectural styles and the values and ideas they represented is not only an honourable architectural practice, it is unavoidable. Architecture and the applied arts are communal activities. Thus we see architects as different as Pugin, Barry, Robert Adam, Wren and Inigo Jones.
