With his bookplate to the front pastedown of all volumes. Evelyn Baring, 1st Earl of Cromer was a British statesman, diplomat and colonial administrator. He was the British controller-general in Egypt during 1879 which was part of the international control which oversaw Egyptian finances after the 1876 Egyptian bankruptcy. M E Grant Duff, the author of these diaries was a Scottish politician, administrator and author. He was the Under-Secretary of State for India from 1868-74 and Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies from 1880-81. In half calf bindings with cloth covered boards. Externally, smart with rubbing to the extremities, joints and spines. Vol I of 1889-91 is particularly rubbed to spine. Front hinge to volume II of 1889-1891 is slightly strained but firm. Small loss to head of spine of volume III (volume I of 1873-81). Head and tail of spine to volume I of 1892-95 is particularly rubbed at front joint. Front hinge to volume II of 1896-1901 is slightly strained but firm. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges with the odd spot throughout. Very Good. book.
