John Work joined the HBC in 1814 and eventuall…y became Chief Factor. In 1849 he settled at his farm near Fort Victoria, where he died in 1861. In 1858, Work continued as a Chief Factor at HBC while his partner, James Douglas, left the firm to assume the governorship of Vancouver Island and British Columbia. At the time, Work was the largest private landowner on Vancouver Island, with some 1,800 acres under his belt. If proof of his dedication to HBC were needed, one could look no further than the HBC men who became his sons-in-law, including William Fraser Tolmie, Work is buried in what is now Pioneer Square, next to Christ Church Cathedral, in downtown Victoria, BC.

Interior is very clean and tight. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The editing and biography by Phillips is excellent. Warren Angus Ferris was a fur trader and trapper in the Rocky Mountains from 1830 to 1835; traveling throughout the West in the employ of there American Fur Company. He explored what is now Yellowstone National Park in 1834. Ferris maintained a diary, which Phillips uses for this prblicatrion. For understanding the Mountain Man era, Ferris is very important. He records day to day activities of the trappers and traders. His narrative is clear and straight forward, he provides vivid descriptions of what he sees and experiences.
