Circumcision does it to us/As in the Bible story of Shechem & the sons of Jacob/so we go on hurting all our lives/.What are we doing coming back to all this pain?/.What are we doing/in this dark land with its/yellow shadows that pierce the eyes?/.What are we doing w/these souls of mist, w/these names/with our eyes of forests, w/our beautiful children/with our quick blood?/Spilled blood is not the roots of trees/but it is the closest thing to roots/we have." Bilingual edition. 356pp. Bright, clean & tight copy, unread, in FINE condition (very slight shelfwear). "Stephen Mitchell's translations bring the qualities that I most cherish in the originals into English with new intimacy and authority. Rilke's voice, with its extraordinary combination of formality, power, speed and lightness, can be heard in Mr. Mitchell's versions more clearly than in any others. His work is masterful."--W. S. Merwin. "His translation of the Duino Elegies--Rilke's masterpiece--is the best that has been made . . . intensely readable--yet he has not simplified the ideas."--Stephen Spender, New York Review of Books. "Perhaps the most beautiful group of poetic translations this century has produced."--The Chicago Tribune. "The best single-volume edition of Rilke available in English."--The Boston Review. Near-pristine FINE paperback w/brilliant corners & crisp edges, a square & tight binding w/no creases in spine. Quite presentable.

Ajouter au panierSoft cover. Etat : Near Fine. In English and German. Later printing. Signed and inscribed by the editor/translator Stephen Mitchell on the title page. The inscription reads 'To Erica, Ken, and Mollly, with love. Stephen.' A very rare signed book. The book is in excellent condition. You can see the covers in the photos. They are very clean. There is a slight bit of soiling on the middle page edge, no spotting, and no impact on the actual pages. The pages are exceptionally clean. I haven't found any soiling at all. I'm not seeing any creasing. There are no markings. And no writing other than the aforementioned signed inscription. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. From the rear cover: 'Stephen Mitchell's translations bring the qualities that I most cherish in the originals into English with new intimacy and authority. Rilke's voice, if it's extraordinary combination of formality, power, speed and lightness, can be heard in Mr. Mitchell's versions more clearly than in any others. His work is masterful.'-- W. S. Merwin. 'It is easy to feel that if Rilke had written in English, he would have written in this English'-- The New York Times Book Review. Inscribed by Author(s).
