Ajouter au panierWraps. Etat : Very good. Second Edition. Octavo, 24pp. Stated "second edition" on title page. Original wraps, bound at spine with twine. Light toning to cover, generally clean text. (Sabin 20693) This followed the first edition the same year. Stephen A. Douglas (1813-1861) was a Democratic senator from Illinois, who ran against Lincoln in 1858 for the Senate seat from Illinois. Their eloquent debates, which would be published in 1860 as the Lincoln-Douglas Debates would help launch the presidential candidacy of Lincoln against Douglas in 1860. During his time in the Senate, Douglas advocated for the principle of popular sovereignty, which allowed new western territories to decide for themselves if slavery would be permitted within their borders. In 1850, he advocated for the Compromise of 1850, which aimed to keep an equal number of slave and non-slave holding states. In 1854, he passed the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which repealed the Missouri Compromise of 1820, created the new territories of Kansas and Nebraska, and followed his principle of popular sovereignty, which allowed the new territories to decide for themselves if they wished to hold slaves. It had the opposite effect on the nation, stoking tensions in the north and solidifying the Republican party as the antislavery party. In the election of 1860, the Democratic party split between his candidacy and John C. Breckinridge of Kentucky. As the Civil War broke out, Douglas rallied support for the Union, but he died in 1861. Second edition of Observations on Senator Douglas's Views of Popular Sovereignty, as Expressed in Harpers' Magazine, for September, 1859. (illustrateur).…

This work was published by request of the American Whig - Cliosophic Societies of Princeton University. (Sabin 18320) This work is signed on the front cover: "from Mr. Dallas / 28 Nov. 1831." George M. Dallas (1792-1864) served as the 11th Vice President of the United States from 1845 to 1849 under President James K. Polk. He graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1810 and subsequently studied law. Dallas entered politics early, serving as the private secretary to Albert Gallatin, a former Treasury Secretary, and then embarked on a diplomatic career, including posts in Russia and Great Britain. Domestically, he served as the Mayor of Philadelphia (1828-1829), the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania (1829-1831), and as a U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania (1831-1833). Dallas was also the 11th Attorney General of Pennsylvania (1833-1835). Dallas sought the White House in 1848, but after taking some controversial tie-breaking votes on tariffs while President of the Senate, he had very little popular support. Signed by George M. Dallas, the future Vice President under President James K. Polk, the first edition of An Address Delivered In the Church at Princeton, September 27, 1831. (illustrateur). Signed.…
