This is a fascinating look at the history of Surrey and how it was during the beginning of the Victorian era, which saw a lot of change in the county with the booming Industrial Revolution. Before this the county was sparsely populated in comparison to other Southern counties, until the industrial improvements, railways, and the enlargement of London resulted in the population in Surrey to expand, with new towns like Woking and Redhill emerging beside railway lines. Volume I illustrated with a hand coloured geological map, one hand coloured folding plate, fifteen plates, and in text wood engravings. Collated, complete.Volume II illustrated with sixteen plates, and in text wood engravings. Collated, complete.Volume III illustrated with nineteen plates, and in text wood engravings. Externally, a little worn, with some rubbing to the boards and spine. Spines are lightly faded. Loss of leather to the extremities and tail of the spine of Volume I. A little loss of leather to the head of the front board and head of the spine of Volume II, and to the tail of the spine of Volume III. Small loss of leather to the head of the rear board and tail of the spine of Volume IV. Loss of leather to the front board and head of the spine of Volume V. Discolouration to the front board of Volume IV. Rear joint of Volume I is strained, board may detach with further handling. Small cracks to the tail of the joints of Volume III. Front joint and front hinge of Volume IV are strained but firm. Rear hinge of Volume IV is starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age toned and generally clean with some spots. Folding plates are both torn along one fold. Tidemark to the head of the last fifty or so pages of Volume IV. Gorgeous gilt decoration and titles on each spine. Marbled endpapers coupled with gilt edging on all papers. Five really nice large, heavy books that are full of fascinating information on the history of Surrey. All five books are well used, a tad worn, corners slightly bumped and worn, a few odd brown spotting marks, but overall considering the books are 175 years old, they are all in nice clean condition. Preface by the author Edward Wedlake Brayley dated April 10th, 1848. Volume One: has 495 pages. Volume Two: has 486 pages. Volume Three: has 527 pages, Volume Four: has 519 pages, Volume Five: has 442 pages plus an additional 96 appendix pages. All bindings are nice and tight, all pages intact and all pages, text, maps, stunning illustrations, wood and steel engravings are all in nice, clean, readable order.
