A comprehensive study of "the central artistic figures of the Elizabethan age". Hilliard was court limner and goldsmith to Elizabeth I of England Ireland and to her successor, James VI/I. The writer, Erna Auerbach, was a German art historian forced to flee her country in 1933 for London. She studied at the Courtauld Institute and became an authority on the artists of Tudor England. The book has an etensive catalogue of nearly 300 painting, a detailed bibliography and an extensive index. . . . . .
