Evans-Pritchard sah es als Ziel an, eine Ethnographie zu schreiben, die eine vollständige, zusammenhängende und genaue Präsentation der Auffassungen der Stämme und Völker darstelle. Nach Meinung von Evans-Pritchard kann kulturelles Leben eines Volkes nur in Zusammenhang mit den persönlichen Erfahrungen seiner Menschen verstanden werden.
