One black-and-white frontispiece portrait illustration of the author, complete. Pages are clean and intact overall except for dampstaining on frontispiece, occasional smudges and marks, light age toning, and a former owner's bookplate tipped in on front pastedown ("Nat. B. Read's Library"). Covers are intact overall but have darkening along spine, chipping at head and tail of spine, worn corners, and faint staining and fading on front and back. Binding is slightly loosened but still strong and holding. A Very Good copy. The Second Series of O. P. Fitzgerald's observations, impressions, and stories of nineteenth-century California taken from his own experiences. Oscar Penn Fitzgerald (1829-1911) was an American Methodist clergyman, journalist, and educator. He entered the ministry of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South (MEC, S) in 1853 and eventually became a bishop. He also served as California Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1867-1871. MEC, S was a denomination of the Methodist Episcopal Church that came about due to a religious schism over issue of slavery. MEC, S later merged into the Methodist Church in 1939.
