ABOUT THIS BOOK: The spiritual tradition of the Low Countries, mostly written in Dutch (or Flemish, which is the same language) must rank, together with the German School, as the most important vernacular tradition in late medieval and early modern Europe. This book presents for the first time texts from this school of Netherlandish mysticism of the late medieval period in English translation. It contains extracts or full treatises from all the major representatives of this school after the death of Jan van Ruusbroec. None of these texts are available in English, and some were never published at all but were translated from late medieval manuscripts. The book contains texts of a mystical and pastoral nature, often dealing with the problem of suffering, reflecting the troubled times during which they were written. Readers will appreciate the wide variety of texts offered here. There are a number of more "traditional" mystical-theological writings that look back to the age of Ruusbroec, developing a profound spirituality of the Trinity (for instance, William Jordaens, a contemporary of Ruusbroec, but also the author of The Evangelical Pearl and the Temple of the Soul). Some of the texts focus almost exclusively on the suffering of Christ, and others anticipate some of the key-themes of the Reformation.(Publisher).…

Paper Back. Etat : New. This newest edition to one of our best-selling series presents a selection of mystical texts from the Netherlands. All of the works included here are first-time translations into English; some have never been translated into any modern language (including Dutch); some have never previously been published in any language, surviving only in manuscript. Naturally, the authors in this volume will not be familiar to a general readership, though many follow the tradition of Jan van Ruusbroec, 'foremost of the Flemish mystics.' The difficult era in which these men and women lived deeply affected their meditations on suffering, spiritual direction and Trinitarian theology. The range of genres spans Augustinian and Franciscan, poetic and devotional, practical and metaphysical, providing a glimpse of spiritual life in Western Europe just prior to the Reformation and the Modern Era.…

Mild edgewear to binding, with bumping to extremities and dust soiling to fore-edge. Binding is firm and sound. Pages are clean and unmarked. A nice first printing of this study of mystical anthropology, exploring the most important mystical authors and texts from the Low Countries including: William of Saint-Thierry, Hadewijch, Pseudo-Hadewijch, John of Ruusbroec, Jan van Leeuwen, Hendrik Herp, and the Arnhem Mystical Sermons, part of the Contemporary Theological Explorations in Mysticism series by Routledge. ABOUT THIS BOOK: The question of the 'structure' of the human person is central to many mystical authors in the Christian tradition. This book focuses on the specific anthropology of a series of key authors in the mystical tradition in the medieval and early modern Low Countries. Their view is fundamentally different from the anthropology that has commonly been accepted since the rise of Modernity. This book explores the most important mystical authors and texts from the Low Countries including: William of Saint-Thierry, Hadewijch, Pseudo-Hadewijch, John of Ruusbroec, Jan van Leeuwen, Hendrik Herp, and the Arnhem Mystical Sermons. The most important aspects of mystical anthropology are discussed: the spiritual nature of the soul, the inner-most being of the soul, the faculties, the senses, and crucial metaphors which were used to explain the relationship of God and the human person. Two contributions explicitly connect the anthropology of the mystics to contemporary thought. This book offers a solid and yet accessible overview for those interested in theology, philosophy, history, and medieval literature. (Publisher). …

Paperback. Etat : New. This book explores the rich and varied mystical writings by and about medieval - and a few early modern - women across Western Europe. Women had a profound and lasting impact on the development of medieval and early modern spiritual and mystical literature, both through their own writing and as a result of the hagiographical texts that they inspired. Bringing together contributions by both established and emerging scholars, the volume provides a valuable overview of medieval mystical women with a special focus on the Low Countries and Italy, regions that produced a disproportionately high number of female mystics. The figures discussed range from Hildegard of Bingen, Hadewijch, Mechthild of Magdeburg, Marguerite Porete, Angela of Foligno, Julian of Norwich, and Beatrice of Nazareth to lesser-known women such as Agnes Blannbekin, Christina of Hane, and Maria Maddalena de' Pazzi. The chapters address topics such as the body, pain, desire, ecstasy, stigmata, annihilation, virtue, visions, the tension between exterior and interior experience, and the nature of mystical union itself.…
