Ajouter au panierFirst edition, early printing (but not a first printing for lack of "1938" at foot of title page per Houghton's contemporary practice). lxiv, 430 pages plus unpaged plates. Hardcover: H 21cm x L 14.25cm. No dust jacket (i.e. lacking). Blue cloth; usual slight fading to spine cloth with its gilt stamping a bit dulled but still legible; front board's gilt stamping remains reasonably bright. Text block edges toned. Light toning and a touch of soiling to endpapers; past owner's O'Casey family Mississippi and Ireland genealogical-themed bookplate affixed upon front free endpaper verso; interior leaves are otherwise clean. Binding is firm. A very good copy. City map illustration to front endpapers; foldout color map (lightly toned and, unfortunately, no longer following its original folds) present in rear pastedown pocket; brief Foreword by WPA Administrator Harry L. Dreyer; eight unpaged sections of b/w plates (mostly photos but including six illustrations by Caroline Durieux); b/w illustrations as chapter headpieces and/or tailpieces; Glossary; Bibliography; Index. Primary text divided amongst three sections titled as "New Orleans: The General Background," "Economic and Social Development." and "Sectional Descriptions and Tours" which feature numerous chapters including "History," "Racial Distribution," "Folkways," "Architecture," "Creole Cuisine," "The Carnival" (i.e. Mardi Gras), "Cemeteries," "Some Negro Cults," etc. Perhaps the best city guide published under the WPA auspices but, of course, New Orleans' insouciance provides content unique among American metropolises.
