Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Good. First Edition. "Back in those good, old days of the mid and late 1930's, I shared with millions of other readers and moviegoers, the grand, adventures of Tarzan, the mighty ape-man. As far as I was concerned, the Big Swinger was a combination of Hercules, Marco Polo and Tom Mix - solidly packed in one bronzed, sinewy body. I was enthralled by the fantastic sweep of Burroughs' imagination. . his complete knowledge and mastery of jungle lore . . the bizarre peoples and pre-historic monsters of his 'lost civilizations'." Robert Fenton never forgot his youthful appreciation for the towering imaginative genius of Edgar Rice Burroughs, and in 1955, this interest was revived when the author purchased Burroughs' original office estate in Tarzana, California, and began to research and to write this extraordinary account of Burroughs, the man, his writing and his world. Here, in brilliant exposition, is the first full-scale biography of Edgar Rice Burroughs, covering the human as well as the artistic abilities which shaped his character and his writing. Complete with compilations, letters, documents, synopses, lists of characters, plots and themes, The Big Swingers not only provides a detailed account of Burroughs' life and literary works, but it weaves a sharp history of events in American history. It also shows Burroughs' broad interest and ready comment on current issues, including: woman suffrage, prohibition, morality in Hollywood, and the Scopes trial in Tennessee. If the early years in Burroughs' life were indicative of things to come, the picture was hardly optimistic: he was dropped from school, was undistinguished as a cavalryman at Fort Grant, lost out in gold mining and showed little talent as a salesman. At thirty-five, he had failed in every enterprise he had ever attempted. He knew nothing about writing technique, but TARZAN OF THE APES, its 25 sequels and 40 other Burroughs' novels, sold more than 36 million copies - and the movie Tarzan was the first star in history who ever came close to grossing a billion dollars at the box office. The Big Swingers is probably one of the most complete biographies ever written. It traces, with meticulous attention to every component part, the whole story of Edgar Rice Burroughs, his work and his world. The Author - Robert Fenton is a free-lance writer who spent five and one-half years in Europe writing for the Marshall Plan, newspapers, magazines, and publishing his own weekly newspaper in Paris, THE EUROPEAN TRAVELER. He then settled in Tarzana, California. where he gathered material for the biography of Edgar Rice Burroughs. While there he wrote free-lance scripts for television. In 1962 Mr. Fenton moved to New York and founded the TEEN FEATURES SYNDICATE, and at present is producing radio and television features. He lives with his wife and three children in Sneden's Landing, New York. All orders shipped protected in a box. Dust jacket has a tiny piece missing. Photographs (illustrateur). Book.…
