When Douglas Findlay signed on for a three-year stint in the service of King and Country, he had visions of being stationed at Kinross near his Edinburgh home and dazzling the city's girls as one of the Brycream boys. The Ministry of Defence had other ideas. Soon he found himself fighting wind-blasted sand, searing sun, marouding mosquitoes and hostile inhabitants who wanted Douglas out of Egypt at as much as he did. Imperfect record though it is, this book is the result of years of assiduous research, and the author gladly acknowledges the help of hundreds of Canal Zone veterans in piecing together a truer picture oof one of Britain's less-glorious military deployments. Instead, he found himself combatting sandstorms, mosquitoes and murderous Egyptians who wanted Doug and his fellow Brits out of the Suez Canal Zone as much as they wanted to go home. This is his account of a lowly 'erk's part in defending the Canal. But the book also has a serious side. Its Roll of Honour records a death toll of over 1,100 and shows why the Government had to do a U-turn and award the medal Suez veterans should have had half a century ago. Signed by Author(s).
