Mc Bride served in my Battalion as private, non~commissioned officer and officer. He was one of the best fighting men I knew and was promoted and decorated on my recommendations. He was considered one of the best "Machine Gunners" in the Allied Army. Also one of the best shots with a rifle. Herbert W. McBride was outstanding as a fighting man, fearless, untiring, a genius for invention, and always seeking authority to be given the opportunity of damaging the enemy. I had the greatest admiration for Captain McBride as a soldier, and with an army of such men it would be an easy matter to win against any troops. It was such fighting ability that enabled my 21st Battalion to come home with the record of never having been given a black eye in over four years of active participation in the war. They never went after anything they did not take, and they never gave up anything they captured. Of the original 1058, less than 150 are now alive, most of them buried in Flanders' Fields and in the Somme.

Terrain feature photographs by Captain Drummond, "assisted by Private First Class A. E. Johnson, 50th Engineer Regiment. (illustrateur). 1st Edition. A collection of short accounts by the officers and men of all ranks who fought on Attu, the westernmost island of the Aleutians. This string of islands, "acquired by the United States in 1867 as part of the Alaska Purchase," extended some one thousand miles west from the mainland of Alaska. Only about 600 miles from Siberia and about 650 miles from a Japanese base in the Kurile Islands, Attu had a grand total in population some 45 native Aleuts and two mainland Americans. The climate here was described as unpleasant: Engulfed in fog most of the time, which could usually not be dispersed by the frequent high winds. The terrain here was described as a nasty combination of "steep, jagged crags, knifelike ridges," and "boggy tundra." All of these elements together arguing against the use of aircraft and vehicles. To top off all of that physical description, "One writer has called Attu 'the lonesomest spot this side of hell.'" As if all of the foregoing were not enough, American forces were faced off against the tough and experienced Japanese in armed combat. This little book testifies to the valor of all of these men.

Inscribed by General David Petraeus: "For Vanessa Davitt, with thanks for your great support of the men and women in uniform who have turned the ideas and concepts in this manual into action on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan - and have done so selflessly, courageously, and creatively! David H. Petraeus." General David Petraeus is a retired army general, who served as the head of U.S. Central Command and Commanding General, Multi-National-Force-Iraq. As Commanding General in Iraq, he oversaw the "troop surge," which arguably broke the ongoing counterinsurgency in the country, allowing for a reduction in troop strength in the country. After retiring from the army, he briefly served as the director of the CIA. Signed.

Staple-bound self-wraps 11x14cm. 8pp printed on blue card by H&S in a run of 10,000 copies, dated 12/15 in their code. Good, dulled with staining to the front, staples rusting. The First Army was formed out of the British Expeditionary Force in December 1914 from the I, IV and Indian Corps under Lieutenant-General Douglas Haig. (General Henry Rawlinson replaced Haig on 22 December 1915 when he was promoted to Commander-in-Chief BEF). In the Battle of Neuve Chapelle (March 1915), the First Army succeeded in capturing the village and advancing 2km with around 7,000 British and 4,200 Indian lives lost. Analysis in the immediate aftermath found the German trenches to be vulnerable to well planned attack, the First Army's command system disintegrated quickly and its telephone system was vulnerable, subordinates failed to grasp Haig's intentions, movements along communication trenches were delayed, units in need of assistance did not receive it, etc. This booklet, issued following those experiences, asks 37 questions. The first two in capital letters, and the last repeating the first are broad in nature: "1 and 37. I am here for two purposes - to do as much damage as possible to the enemy and to hold my part of the line at all costs. Am I doing everything possible to ensure my being able to do this? // 2. Do I worry the enemy as much as I might do, and are the sniper-scopes, rifle grenades, catapults and patrols at my disposal organised in the best way to effect this purpose?". The rest focus on strengthening the line, counter-attack, support, positions, unnecessary exposure, sentries, messages to HQ, knowledge of duties, snipers, absolute silence and relief, navigation, telephone location, intelligence gathering, approaching the enemy, SOS and gas messages, gas attack, smoke and tube helmets, bullet proofing, defensive wiring, drainage, ability to effect repairs without help from the Royal Engineers, weather proof sleeping arrangements, hygiene, bomb and ammunition stores, maintenance, trench feet, wearing required equipment, use of notice boards and other non-stores items as firewood, authorised drinking water sources, knowing every NCOs name and them knowing yours, sufficient sleep, periscopes, and issuing rum. This looks to be extremely rare, with Worldcat and Library Hub listing later editions c1916-17 including by the US Army. It was part of a series with other booklets covering questions before an attack, and when the object of an attack has been gained.
