Flory (1854-1914), a prominent minister of the Church of the Brethren and the founder and first president of Bridgewater College, a private liberal-arts college in Bridgewater, Virginia. Established in 1880, Bridgewater College admitted both men and women from the time of its founding and was the first private, co-educational, liberal arts college in Virginia to do so. The Church of the Brethren is a Christian denomination with origins in the Schwarzenau Brethren that was organized in 1708 by Alexander Mack in Schwarzenau, Germany, as a melding of the Radical Pietist and Anabaptist movements. The denomination holds the New Testament as its only creed.
