SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, ON 'EXCLUSIVE SIGNED EDITON' PAGE, IN BLUE PEN, WITHOUT DEDICATION. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, slight lean, page fore edges dyed blue with 'wave' illustration stencils, continuation of handsome jacket illustration, not price clipped (£14.99), no other inscriptions, internally clean and tight, overall a vg+ copy. 423pp, illustrated endpapers. 836, Prussia. Hanne is nearly fifteen and the domestic world of womanhood is quickly closing in on her. A child of nature, she yearns instead for the rush of the river, the wind dancing around her. Hanne finds little comfort in the local girls and friendship doesn't come easily, until she meets Thea and she finds in her a kindred spirit and finally acceptance. Hanne's family are Old Lutherans, and in her small village hushed worship is done secretly, this is a community under threat. But when they are granted safe passage to Australia, the community rejoices: at last a place they can pray without fear, a permanent home. Freedom. It'' a promise of freedom that will have devastating consequences for Hanne and Thea, but, on that long and brutal journey, their bond proves too strong for even nature to break . Scarce signed. Jacket, endpapers and wave fore edge illustrations by Sam Scales (illustrateur). Signed by Author(s). …

Kl.-8° (17 x 10 cm.). Dark red morocco leather binding with a gold-stamped spine label, lavish gilding on the spine and cover, gilded inner edges, and fore-edge painting beneath a gilt edge. - A magnificent English morocco leather binding featuring "fore-edge painting" a hidden decoration applied to the edges of the pages, which remains invisible both when the book is open and when it is closed. The painting only becomes visible when the pages of the book are pressed together and shifted slightly against one another. An image then appears on the book's fore-edge, in this case a village street with pedestrians. - Contemporary owner's inscription; the first few pages are stained with brown spots, otherwise very well preserved.…

With a fore-edge painting of âA Wyoming Chieftainâ â" harkening figures showing within this volume (pp. 169, 174, 205) â" actually loosely inspired by â" where a vertical painting showing the native American figure within a natural setting. The fictional character of Outalissi is an Oneida chief in âGertrude of Wyomingâ, a famous 1809 Romantic epic poem written by the Scottish poet Thomas Campbell. 2 volumes in 1. Small 8vo. vii, [1], 212; [vi], 178 pp. Endsheets foxed. Original full dark red blind- and gilt-stamped morocco, raised bands, gilt-spine title, both covers with large heraldic shield showing 3 stags, all edges gilt, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endsheets; rubbed. Ink signature of Joan M. Tate. Very good. With a not-so-serious tennis scene depicted in a garden setting, on grass, a low net, the 2 players (a man serving to a woman, looking quite stationary), in 19th century clothing, and an older man collecting the balls into a basket. / I am quite sure the firm commissioning this painting, and the artist, both understand the joke of a "tennis scene" painted on a volume of "Tennyson". In other words, the scene is deliberately painted on this volume, meant as a joke. / Sold by Harrington's, probably commissioned by or represented by that firm just after it was painted, suggesting a house artist, the period of execution being the mid-1990s. Painting attributed to Lindsay Brufton (not confirmed).…

INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR THOMAS HUGHES: This copy with the following inked inscription: âCarrie Wynne Ffoulkes on her marriage with all good wishes from the author, Sept 1892, Thos. Hughesâ. Good. With a fore-edge painting showing the same scene as on the frontispiece, but different! The title of the frontispiece reads: âTomâs âwinâ in honour of his father. The squire, who has been carefully planted by Tom with his back to the death warrant, enjoys himself very muchâ. (p. 407). Note the dog on the right chair and the absence of the barmaid, nor the definition of the columns which are titled on the frontispiece. Commissioned by or for Harringtonâs (with their cost-codes) probably in the mid-to-late 1990s. Fore-edge painting attributed to Lindsay Brufton.…

Original red morocco by Riviere, all edges gilt, dark marine-green endsheets; expertly REBACKED recently with raised bands, gilt-spine tooling â" a tremendous job by the binder. Bookplate (pre-fore-edge) of Antoinette Brett. Near fine. With a sweet delicately painted scene within an elaborate border with flowers and plants in the sides or corners, a framed oval contains a charming scene in watercolors, which, once fanned, shows a scene of two women beside a door, opening up to a gated and tranquil-like setting in the country. / This is the same artist as the "Greek erotic" scene, Stanley, Lectures on the History of the Jewish Church. 1877, 1870. 2 vols. / Sold by Harrington's with their cost-marks, probably a product of either their commission or some direct involvement involving a house-artist. Ascribed to the period ca. 1990s-2007. Painting attributed to Margaret Selmes (not confirmed).…
