The plate shown is of Elizabeth Zane's Revolutionary War heroic act. She was an ancester of Zane Grey. He wrote his first book, "Betty… Zane", centered on her. Very nice, in & out. All gilt quite nice. Cover extrems scuffed. Inside flawless but for hint of pastedown glue browning & neatly inked gift note dated Jan 1, 1881. ALSO: book stays closed when stood on spine, a sign of having been seldom read. NOTE: title on cover omits the word "American". VG++ book. Tight. FINE inside, including all 3 text block edges. 16 full page engravings. (illustrateur).
