Soft cover. Etat : Good. This is a 1954 paperback edition of Quevedo's "Vida del Buscon:, a 17th century picaresque novel. This copy has seen use and has some marginalia and a few underlinings, but is basically clean and serviceable. Text in Castelan. **************************************** Francisco Quevedo was a Spanish poet of the Baroque Era, who was representative of the conceptismo style, which was known for directness, wit, pithy metaphors and clever wordplay. He was of noble Castilian ancestry. Born in Madrid in 1580, his full name was Francisco Gómez de Quevedo y Santibáñez Villegas . Quevedo was much involved in the politics of his day, and managed, through having a prickly personality - one not above ridiculing others - managed to have a considerable number of enemies. This aside, his personal career ranged from spectacular success: as a knighted member of the personal entourage of King Philip IV (who shared Quevedo's personal indulgence in a rowdy, dissolute life-style) - to spectacular disaster. From success to imprisonment, exile, and the confiscation of his writings . which were extensive. Hard to encapsulate such a richly turbulent life in a few sentences. Thanks to Wikipedia for most of this! ************************************** I heartily encourage anyone interested to read the Wikipedia article on Quevedo . it is quite entertaining. Quevedo's outrageous personality was bigger than life, and he was a richer character than most fictional creations! ****************************************** "Vida del Buscon" is the only novel that Quevedo wrote. It's full title is "Historia de la vida del Buscón, llamado Don Pablos, ejemplo de vagamundos y espejo de tacaños", which can be paraphrased as "History of the life of the Swindler, called Don Pablos, model for hobos and mirror of misers". The story has been translated as "Paul the Sharper", or "The Scavenger", and also as "The Swindler". The story, written circa 1604, is presented in a picaresque mode, and is divided into three section. This edition, edited, with notes and an Introduction by Luys Santa Marina, was published by Espasa - Calpe, S. A. in Madrid in 1954 in the publisher's monographic series, "Clasicos Castellanos"; it is the Third Edition, issued in paperback format. *********************************** SERIES : Clasicos Castellanos (no. 5) / TITLE : Quevedo I Vida del Buscon ( Historia de la vida del Buscón, llamado Don Pablos, ejemplo de vagamundos y espejo de tacaños) / AUTHOR : Francisco Quevedo ( Francisco Gómez de Quevedo y Santibáñez Villegas, 1580 - 1645 ) / EDITOR / NOTES / INTRODUCTION : Luys Santa Marina / IMPRINT : Espasa - Calpe, S. A. / PLACE : Madrid / DATE : (1954) / EDITION : Third Edition / SPECIAL ATTRIBUTES : Text in Catalan. PHYSICAL DETAILS : Trade paperback; Contains an Introduction and notes; xv + 216 pages; 5 1/8" x 7 5/8", printed buff wraps, with yapp edges (slightly extended edges). Cover printed in red and black. CONDITION - GOOD - A previously owned book which does have a bit of underlining and marginalia, but elsewise remains clean and serviceable, the following noted: EXTERIOR : Spine is darkened and displays vertical creasing; spine extremities slightly nicked and a little rough; cover surfaces display modest rub and a touch of weathering about the edges; yapp edges display the chipping and small tears typical of such extended edges (one readily visible tear to the fore-edge of the front) - else clean. / BINDING : As solid as can be expected . while the book opens widely, no leaves are detached or loose / INTERIOR : The paper throughout is lightly toned. There are a few inked notes or marginalia and a bit of underlining . these near the front of the book - while there may be more in later parts of the book, upon perusal I did not spot any such; some of the leaves after page 66 remain unseparated, so the book has not been read all the way through.
