Second Printing. "When President Kennedy announced America's commitment to the exploration of space in 1961, he launched the greatest adventure of the second half of the twentieth century. A handful of singular men and women stepped forward to spearhead that national quest, and Frank Borman was one of them. As an astronaut, Borman flew two of NASA's riskiest missions: Gemini 7 launched him on a fourteen-day trip in a crew compartment that wasn't much bigger than the front seat of a Volkswagen Beetle, to the first manned-spacecraft rendezvous in orbit: Apollo 8, the first manned voyage around the moon, took Borman and his crew a half-million miles through space. They were the first human beings who actually saw the world in its totality. After Apollo 8, Borman was NASA's liaison with the White House for the first lunar landing mission, Apollo 11, which paved the way for the delicate diplomatic missions he would later conduct in Europe and the USSR. Borman was offered cabinet-level positions by three American Presidents, and he addressed joint sessions of Congress twice. But if his struggles, his dedication, his achievements, and the personal sacrifices he made up to this point had exacted a price from himself and the family that had stood by him, his new career would provide an even greater test of the values he cherished most. When Borman was appointed president of Eastern Airlines in May 1975, he assumed responsibility for a $1 billion deficit, a very competitive, short-haul route system, unrealistic and unproductive labor contracts, and a fleet that was fuel-inefficient and mostly obsolete. Borman went to work. Along with a modernized fleet and improved service, he established good relations with the unions and achieved unprecedented management stability. Between 1976 and 1980 Eastern enjoyed the most profitable four-year period in its history. Then came deregulation of the airline industry and all its attendant challenges and crises. In one of the most gripping and suspenseful boardroom dramas ever told, Borman describes the excruciating battle to keep Eastern alive and independent. With the help of Robert J. Serling, Frnak Borman has written a full-blown thoroughly involving autobiography that is so authoritative, and so rich in detail about an important and thrilling era in our history, that it places the reader right in the middle of the excitement and tragedy of it all. It is the story of a homegrown American hero who carved out a chunk of that history, both in the wild blue yonder and here on earth." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. Frank Frederick Borman II (March 14, 1928 - November 7, 2023) was an American United States Air Force (USAF) colonel, aeronautical engineer, NASA astronaut, test pilot, and businessman. He was the commander of Apollo 8, the first mission to fly around the Moon, and together with crewmates Jim Lovell and William Anders, became the first of 24 humans to do so, for which he was awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor. He owned and rebuilt a rare World War II single-engine fighter, the Bell P-63 Kingcobra. It won the prestigious Grand Champion Warbird award when exhibited at Oshkosh in 1998. As an astronaut, Frank Borman flew on two of NASA's riskiest missions--Gemini 7 (the first manned-spacecraft rendezvous in orbit) and Apollo 8 (the first manned voyage around the moon). Frank Frederick Borman II (born March 14, 1928), (Col, USAF, Ret.), is a retired United States Air Force pilot, aeronautical engineer, test pilot, and NASA astronaut, best remembered as the Commander of Apollo 8, the first mission to fly around the Moon, making him, along with crew mates Jim Lovell and Bill Anders, the first of only 24 humans to do so. Before flying on Apollo, he set a fourteen-day spaceflight endurance record on Gemini 7, and also served on the NASA review board which investigated the Apollo 1 fire. After leaving NASA, he was the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Eastern Air Lines from 1975 to 1986. Borman is a recipient of the Congressional Space Medal of Honor. He is currently the oldest living former American astronaut, just eleven days older than fellow astronaut Jim Lovell. Derived from a Publishers Weekly article: The exciting account included here of Borman's NASA years (he took part in the Gemini 7 and Apollo 8 spaceflights, and also served as a troubleshooter and project manager). In 1970, Borman went to work for Eastern Airlines, a company ``riddled with inept management and uncaring unions,'' to eventually take over as president and CEO. His most difficult task: cutting labor costs. The book describes Eastern's prolonged, bitter struggle to remain independent, a management/labor fight Borman lost in 1986 when Eastern became part of Texas Air. The most impressive section of this highly readable autobiography, coauthored with novelist Sterling, is the depiction of Borman's confrontations with intransigent labor leaders and the dynamics of their negotiations. Also memorable is the tribute to Susan Borman's poignant struggle to be ``the Perfect Wife married to the Perfect Husband who was the Perfect Astronaut in a Perfect American Family raising Perfect Children.'' Borman became an aviation consultant. Collector's Edition, Number 1103 of 3000.
