Ajouter au panierPaperback. Etat : Very Good. Garioch's most well-known work is his satirical and humorous verse written in Scots, such as the Edinburgh Sonnets, Embro to the Ploy and The Canny Hen. These poems offer shrewd observations of the city and its inhabitants, and Garioch himself acknowledged the influence of another of Edinburgh's great poets, Robert Fergusson, in this respect. Garioch was also well-known as the translator into Scots of authors as disparate as Apollinaire, Pindar and the nineteenth-century Roman poet Guiseppe Belli, with whom he felt a particular affinity. He also wrote an autobiographical work, Two Men and a Blanket, in which he recounts his experiences as a prisoner-of-war in Italy and Germany in the 1940s. Towards the end of his life, he was Writer-in-Residence at Edinburgh University, and also worked as lexicographer and transcriber in the School of Scottish Studies, Edinburgh University. He died in 1981. This is the first major volume of Robert Garioch's poetry in over twenty years. Unlike the previous edition of his work (1983), it follows Garioch's own ordering of his poems, includes his own notes, as well as editorial explanations for readers unfamiliar with Garioch's Edinburgh background and. Ajouter au panierSoft cover. Etat : Good. 1st Edition. 72 pages. This title is a Poetry Book Society Recommendation. "Fields of Focus" is Robin Fulton's first collection of poetry since his "Selected Poems 1963-1978", and brings together poems written between 1974 and 1979. Like his previous work, this volume centres on themes of time and space and on the precariousness of the human ego caught within them. As Roger Garfitt wrote in "Stand", 'he is a poet who brings his mind to bear on the evidence of his senses, and who is concerned, in particular, to inhabit the time dimension as sensitively as he inhabits the other three'. Reflected with particular vividness in this book is Fulton's visual response to the Scandinavian landscapes among which he lives and works. (SL#43).

Since 1973 his home base has been in Norway and, in the decades since, he has built a solid reputation as a translator of Scandinavian poets, such as Tomas Transtroemer, Kjell Espmark and Harry Martinson from Swedish and Olav H. Hauge from Norwegian. His A Northern Habitat: Collected Poems 1960-2010 (Marick Press, 2013) was described by Carol Rumens in The Guardian as "a major achievement, enriching the habitat of contemporary letters in our own archipelago and beyond." John Glenday, in Northwards Now, referred to the book as "a real treasure of a collection, a weighty, important reminder that Fulton Macpherson is a prominent figure in Scottish poetry. His poetry is enduring as granite. It will weather well", while Peter M. McDonald, in Rain Taxi, felt certain that "A Northern Habitat will stand the test of time. It is arguably the most important book yet from a Scottish poet in this new millennium.".
