Gebhard (1927 - 1 March 1996) was a leading architectural historian, particularly known for his books on the architecture and architects of California. He was a long-time faculty member at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and was dedicated to the preservation of Santa Barbara architecture. In addition to his long teaching career, he served as director of the University Art Museum for twenty years, building a small gallery into a significant accredited university museum. In this position, he initiated the Architectural Drawings Collection, now one of the leading West Coast repositories for architectural materials. With Robert Winter he co-authored guides to architecture in northern and southern California. Gebhard served for many years on the Santa Barbara County Architectural Board of Review. He was active in the Society of Architectural Historians, and served a term as its president in the 1980s. Contents include properties of: George Stewart, Aline Barnsdall, Hollyhock House, La Miniatura, Alice Millard, Charles Ennis, John Storer, Samuel Freeman, Paul R. Hanna, Honeycomb House, Sidney Bazett, George Sturges, Arch Oboler Gatehouse, Clinton Walker, Maynard Buehler, Morris Gift Shop, Robert Berger, Arthur Mathews, Wilbur Pearce, Anderton, Karl Kundert Medical, Randall Fawcett, Robert Walton, George Albin, Pilgrim Congregational. Marin County Civic Center, Hilary Feldman. The California Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright (first published as Romanza) is the first book to focus exclusively on Wright's commercial and residential work in the Golden State, from the 1909 Stewart House to the Marin County Civic Center designed 50 years later. Romanza is the first book to focus exclusively on Frank Lloyd Wright's California architecture. It chronicles a remarkable body of work. From his Mayan-inspired residences of the early twenties to the Marin County Civic Center completed in 1972, from the modular Honeycomb House to the ingenious Morris store façade, Wright's individualism is strongly represented. Fantastic, futuristic, domestic, or harmonious, these buildings embody the characteristics of a romantic vision, one that aspires to further a beneficial interaction between art, man, and nature. These timelessly elegant and striking buildings -- 24 in all -- are known collectively as Wright's romanza, or romance, acknowledging the architect's love for California. Each of these classic edifices dynamically demonstrates Wright's genius for reflecting and enhancing the natural terrain with his creations. Incisive essays provide a critical overview and history of each structure and are generously illustrated with photographs, floor plans, and Wright's own renderings. This volume is an essential visual reference work that will appeal to anyone fascinated by the oeuvre of the 20th century's most influential architect. Frank Lloyd Wright (June 8, 1867 - April 9, 1959) was an American architect, designer, writer, and educator. He designed more than 1,000 structures over a creative period of 70 years. Wright played a key role in the architectural movements of the twentieth century, influencing architects worldwide through his works and hundreds of apprentices in his Taliesin Fellowship. Wright believed in designing in harmony with humanity and the environment, a philosophy he called organic architecture. This philosophy was exemplified in Fallingwater (1935), which has been called "the best all-time work of American architecture" First Paperback Edition [stated]. Second printing [stated].
