Papierbedingt leicht gebräunt. - In August 1969, toward the end of the campaign at Sardis, an excavating machine started digging a canal on behalf of the villagers of Sart Mustafa within the bed of the Pactolus. On August 24, the machine struck several pieces of marble. One of them was half of a pedimental relief (Pis. 99-i02a), the others were Roman architectural pieces. The pieces were found some 2 meters below the present bed of the Pactolus, in the vicinity of our excavation sector "Pactolus Cliff"1 at the grid intersection W 360/S 588. I have shown that the head belongs to the second half of the third century A.D. and reflects the earliest phase of late antique spiritualization of portraiture, in which plastic values and realistic observation are still retained but regrouped in the service of a new psychological ideal. Papierbedingt leicht gebräunt. - Sardis was an ancient city at the location of modern Sart (Sartmahmut before 19 October 2005), near the Salihli in Turkey's Manisa Province. Sardis was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Lydia, one of the important cities of the Persian Empire, the seat of a Seleucid Satrap, the seat of a proconsul under the Roman Empire, and the metropolis of the province Lydia in later Roman and Byzantine times. As one of the seven churches of Asia, it was addressed by John, the author of the Book of Revelation in the New Testament,[2] in terms which seem to imply that its church members did not finish what they started, that they were about image and not substance. Its importance was due first to its military strength, secondly to its situation on an important highway leading from the interior to the Aegean coast, and thirdly to its commanding the wide and fertile plain of the Hermus.
