Not a book but a 10-inch, 33-1/3 rpm vinyl jazz album, PJLP-1 (though jacket front panel reads "PLJP-1", in which surely something has been transposed, though either way this would still appear to be Pacific Jazz's first release), near-mint vinyl in a very-good-plus jacket with full original gloss but starting to show some edge rub and just the beginnings of some ringwear. The personnel are, of course, Gerry Mulligan on baritone sax; the young Chesney H. "Chet" Baker, trumpet (shown upside down); Forestorn "Chico" Hamilton, drums, and Von "Bob" Whitlock on bass, offering "Frenesi," "Lullaby of the Leaves," "Aren't You Glad You're You," Baker's "Freeway," Mulligan's "Soft Shoe," "Walkin' Shoes" and "Nights at the Turntable." Mulligan writes "The band recorded herein has been in existence as an organized group for five or six months," playing the Black Hawk in San Francisco and then the Haig in Los Angeles. Why no piano? "The piano's accepted function of constantly stating the chords of the progression makes the solo horn a slave to the whim of the piano player," Mulligan explains. This is the bop. (Some date this disc from 1952.) Reduced from $65.
