Issued in decorative cloth with gilt lettering to spine. First English edition in a custom made slipcase. Friedrich Gerstäcker was a German traveler and novelist. After being apprenticed to a commercial house, he learned farming in Saxony, but in 1837 engaged as a cabin-boy on a vessel bound from Bremen to New York. In America he wandered over a large part of the United States, supporting himself by whatever work came to hand. After wandering through most of the United States, spending some time as a hunter and trapper in the Indian territory, and in 1842 keeping a hotel at Point Coupée, Louisiana. His writings in the form of essays, short stories, and novels provide insights into folkways, social conditions, popular religion, gender roles, and a host of other topics relating to backwoods life in Arkansas. After his return to Germany, Gerstäcker began a career as a writer, based initially on his American experiences. The collection, describing the author's eighteen months in South America, includes chapters on Ecuador, Quito, Guayaquil, Peru, the Amazon River, the route from Callao to Valparaiso and from there to Valdivia, Patagonia, Cape Horn, and Uruguay. The lengthy section on Brazil (III, 130-287) mentions Porto Alegre, Rio Grande, Santa Catarina, and Rio de Janeiro.Gerstäcker (1816-1872), novelist and travel writer, son of a famous opera singer, left his native Germany at age 21 to wander through the United States. Upon his return 6 years later he found that his mother's publication of his New World sketches had made him famous. From 1849 to 1852 Gerstäcker visited North and South America, Polynesia, and Australia. In 1860, with German immigration in mind, he revisited South America, recording his observations in this work, published in 1863. Gerstäcker left 44 volumes of published works that were quite influential: his short story Germelshausen was adopted as the plot of the musical Brigadoon (1954).*** Cf. The first ten chapters detail his travels at sea and in South America. After a short stay in Valparaiso, he made San Francisco and 'the new wonderful land, with its golden dreams' on September 13. The second portion of what George Cosgrove calls 'one of the most entertaining and intelligent narratives of that period' covers in vivid detail his mining experiences [.] In addition to providing excellent observations of daily life, Gerstäcker's narrative is invaluable for documenting the activities of Germans in the gold fields, the difficulties of being a foreigner, and the miner's tax. As Cowan states, this popular travel book appeared in a number of English and American versions with a different titles and minor text changes" (Gary Kurutz, The California Gold Rush). This T. Nelson and Sons edition is essentially the same story as his Narrative of a Journey Round the World, published by Harper & Brothers and Hurst and Blackett, respectively, in 1853.
