Paperback. Etat : New. Henry Spencer Moore (1898-1986) was one of the most influential British artists of the twentieth century. This catalogue considers Moore's celebrated Shelter drawings as the point of departure for a new reading of the artist's fascination with images of walls, during and immediately after World War II. It accompanies a focused exhibition at the Courtauld Gallery. **After the destruction of his London studio early in World War II, Henry Moore began drawing figures sheltering from bomb raids in the London Underground. This catalogue and exhibition consider Moore's celebrated series as the point of departure for a new reading of the artist's fascination with images of walls, during and immediately after World War II. In the London Underground, where Moore drew these figures, the walls of these sheltered spaces came to absorb his attention in an altogether new way, becoming scene-setters, and key components of his drawings. This fascination with the bricks and the presence of walls, their texture, mass and volume, became especially important after his project to illustrate the wartime radio play The Rescue, based on Homer's Odyssey. _Henry Moore: Shadows on the Wall_, a collaboration with the Henry Moore Foundation, suggests for the first time that the walls in his drawings offer a new way to understand some of his most individual and monumental Post-War sculpture projects.…

Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Rodin & Dance: The Essence of Movement is the first serious study of Rodin's late sculptural series known as the Dance Movements. Exploring the artist's fascination with dance and bodies in extreme acrobatic poses, the exhibition and accompanying catalogue give an account of Rodin's passion for new forms of dance - from south-asian dances to the music hall and the avant garde - which began appearing on the French stage around 1900. Rodin made hundreds of drawings and watercolors of dancers. From about 1911 he also gave sculptural expression to this fascination with dancers' bodies and movements in creating the Dance Movements, a series of small clay figure studies (each approx. 30 cm in height) that stretch and twist in unsettling ways. These leaping, turning figures in terracotta and plaster were not exhibited during Rodin's lifetime or known beyond his close circle, and were only cast in bronze posthumously. Presented alongside the associated drawings and photographs of some of the dancers, they show a new side to Rodin's art, in which he pushed the boundaries of sculpture, expressing themes of flight and gravity. This exhibition catalogue aims to become the authoritative reference for Rodin's Dance Movements, comprising essays from leading scholars in the field of sculpture. It will include an introductory essay on the history of the bronze casting of the Dance Movements and the critical fortune of the series, an essay on the dancers Rodin admired, and an extensive technical essay. The Catalogue will comprise detailed entries on the works in the exhibition and new technical information on the drawings. Contributors include Alexandra Gerstein, Curator of Sculpture and Decorative Arts, The Courtauld Gallery; Antoinette Le Normand-Romain, Director, Institut National d'Histoire de l'Art, Paris; Juliet Bellow, Associate Professor of Art History, American University in Washington, DC and currently Resident Fellow, the Center for Ballet and the Arts, New York University; Francois Blanchetiere, Curator of Sculpture at the Musee Rodin with sculpture conservators Agnes Cascio and Juliette Levy; Sophie Biass-Fabiani, Curator of Works on Paper at the Musee Rodin; Kate Edmondson, Conservator of Works on Paper at The Courtauld Gallery; and Aline Magnien, Director of the Laboratoire de Recherche des Monuments Historiques. First serious study of Rodins late sculptural series known as the Dance Movements (from 1911), comprising essays from leading scholars in the field of sculpture. This exciting book provides an opportunity to discover the vital and expressive role of colour in Barbara Hepworth's sculpture Barbara Hepworth (1903-1975) is one of the most celebrated artists of the 20th century, best known for her abstract sculptural forms inspired by nature and the rugged seaside landscapes of Cornwall, where she lived and worked. Accompanying a major new exhibition at the Courtauld Gallery, this ambitious catalogue is the first to explore the artist's lifelong fascination with colour, which she used in highly original and unexpected ways. The exhibition and accompanying book will unite for the first time her early innovative sculptures with the colour of the 1940s, exploring them alongside the most important drawings from that decade, and will include major examples of her work with colour from the 1950s and 1960s. This focused, research-driven volume will comprise around 20 sculptures and 30 exceptional drawings, showing sculpture in dialogue with her painted and graphic works. It provides an exciting and unique opportunity to discover the vital and expressive role of colour in Hepworth's sculpture, offering a fresh way of understanding one of the most remarkable artists of the 20th century.
