Gibson and significantly expanded by the renowned archaeologist James Burgess (former Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India). Grünwedel's work was one of the first to systematically categorize the "Gandhara School" and its Greco-Roman influences, contrasting them with the indigenous Indian styles of Bharhut and Sanchi.
