Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book, a collection of essays by the author, examines the sinking of The London, a steamship that went down in the Bay of Biscay in 1866. After the author's brother-in-law, a passenger on the ship, penned a final letter detailing his belief that the ship was dangerously overloaded, the author began to investigate. Investigating the practices of shipbuilders and owners in the mid-19th century, the author demonstrates how cutthroat business practices and a lack of regulation contributed to the sinking and the loss of hundreds of lives. The author presents evidence from survivors, nautical experts, and independent observers to support the assertion that the London was inherently unstable due to a combination of design flaws and excessive cargo weight. The author goes on to explore the ethical implications of the tragedy and the ways in which greed and negligence can lead to disaster. The book also examines the broader historical context of maritime travel and the prevailing attitudes towards safety and responsibility in the 19th century merchant marine industry. In doing so, this book provides a cautionary tale whose insights remain highly relevant today. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Ajouter au panier4to bifolium (leaf dimensions 26 x 20.5 cm). The notification certificate is on the recto of the first leaf, and Highton's letter is on the recto of the second. Versos of both leaves blank. Good, on lightly aged and creased paper, with 5 cm closed tear to margin of second leaf caused by removal of letter from stub, traces of which still adhere to the verso of the second leaf. The certificate is tastefully printed in black, with the Society's crest in red in the top left-hand corner. The Society's address on the letterhead has been corrected by Highton from 4 St Martin's Place to 21 Delahay Street, St James's Park. The 'private note' (twenty-five lines including seventeen-line postscript) covers the whole of the recto of the second leaf. Highton congratulates Williamson, and gives some information regarding the Society before concluding with information regarding his forthcoming 'Shakespearian Work', 'somewhat retarded by the advice of the Publishers & Booksellers not to issue it until the deluge of Xmas Books was over, & likewise by the great difficulties attending the attempt to secure an American copyright'. In his obituary in The Times, 6 July 1942, Williamson was praised as 'a highly industrious and versatile writer on art'.…
