This is the first archaelogical report based on historical research in Spanish and British manuscripts and on site excavations done at the oldest house in St. Augustine, Florida. Several authors contributed chapters to this work. The bulk of the excavation was done by John Griffin in 1954. One finding which emerged from their collaborative research was the extent of the damage done by the British attack and burining of St. Augustine in 1702. St. Augustine is the oldest continually occupied European settlement in North America (est. 1565).
