Hardcover. Etat : new. Hardcover. Antiochus III, the king of the Seleucid Empire for four decades, ruled a powerful state for a long time. He fought and won many battles from India to Egypt, and he lost almost as many. Compared with most of the other Hellenistic monarchs of Macedonian-founded kingdoms, Antiochus had a greater va…riety of units that he could field in his army. He was in a unique position among the other kings because he had access to the traditional infantry-based Greek cultures in Asia Minor as well as the cavalry-dominant cultures of Mesopotamia and Western Asia. Yet, despite these advantages, Antiochus repeatedly came up short on the battlefield and his tactical shortcomings were no more obviously laid bare than at the Battle of Magnesia-ad-Sipylum in 190 BC. There his huge combined army, one of the largest ever fielded by Hellenistic rulers, was soundly thrashed by the smaller Roman force.Through an analysis of the Seleucid army, the inherited standard tactics of Macedonian-style armies reliant on the sarissa phalanx, and a detailed examination of the three main battles of Antiochus III, this book will show how it was his failure to utilize combined arms at its fullest realization that led to such a world-changing defeat at Magnesia. Detailed study of the battlefield command of Antiochus III, one of the most powerful and significant leaders of his era. Hardcover. Etat : new. Hardcover. The Third Roman-Macedonian War was a disaster for Macedon, a defeat leading to the end of that kingdom's independence. This is usually attributed to an innate superiority of the Roman legionary tactics over the Macedonian system. Graham Wrightson, on the other hand, argues that the blame lies en…tirely with Perseus, the last king of Macedon. He analyses the whole war, following the primary source accounts and focusing on Perseus' military decisions and his battlefield strategies. It confirms the prevailing view of the sources that Perseus was too hesitant and non-committal in his early conduct of the war. More significantly it argues that Perseus mishandled the Macedonian army when it comes to combined-arms tactics by adopting a defensive posture, particularly at the final battle of Pydna. The Macedonian military system based on a slow sarissa phalanx is suited entirely to an offensive battle plan coordinating a frontally irresistible phalanx in the centre and a rapid heavy cavalry attack on one wing. Most importantly, though, Perseus refused to spend money to hire 10,000 Gallic horsemen and the lack of cavalry cost him the initiative and the victory. This is a fascinating and thoroughly researched study of these dramatic events that adds fresh insight to the question of the legion's supposed supremacy over the phalanx. AUTHOR: Graham Wrightson is Associate Professor of History at South Dakota State University, USA. Originally from the UK (Coventry, then Wales) he graduated at Cambridge University before moving to Calgary, Canada, where he gained his MA and PhD. His research specializes in ancient warfare, particularly that of Alexander the Great and the Successors. His previous works include The Battles of Antiochus the Great, published by Pen & Sword in 2022. 16 b/w illustrations This is a fascinating and thoroughly researched study of these dramatic events that adds fresh insight to the question of the legion's supposed innate supremacy over the phalanx. Etat : New. Hardback 196 pages + plates The Third Romanâ"Macedonian War marked a decisive catastrophe for Macedon, culminating in the loss of its independence. While the defeat is often ascribed to the inherent superiority of Roman legionary tactics over the Macedonian system, Graham Wrightson challenges this interpretation by p…lacing responsibility squarely on King Perseus. Through close engagement with the primary sources, he reconstructs the conflict with particular attention to Perseusâs strategic choices and battlefield conduct. The evidence supports the long-standing view that Perseus displayed excessive caution in the early stages of the war. More importantly, Wrightson argues that Perseus fundamentally mismanaged the Macedonian armyâs combined-arms potential by adopting an unduly defensive posture, most notably at Pydna. The Macedonian sarissa phalanxâ"slow-moving but devastating when advancingâ"required an offensive plan integrating its frontal power with a decisive heavy cavalry strike on one flank. Perseusâs refusal to finance the recruitment of 10,000 Gallic horsemen further deprived him of the cavalry strength necessary to seize the initiative. This study offers a rigourous and engaging reassessment of the war and provides valuable new perspective on the long-standing debate over the legionâs supposed tactical superiority to the phalanx.
