An overview of American Western art, with in-depth analysis of the significant contributors to the history of the genre such as; Remington, Russell, Bierstadt, Moran, O'Keefe, and Bingham. Also included are many of the lesser known artists, such as Grace Carpenter Hudson, William Hahn, Henry Farney, and John Mix Stanley. Illustrated throughout with color photos. Orange cloth covered boards with the title and author imprinted on the spine in gold. Boards are flat, and the corners are not bumped or creased. Some fading to the bottom edges of the boards, small spots of edge wear to the head and heel of the spine. The dust jacket is intact and is not price clipped. There is a diagonal cut to the top right corner of the title page - about 1/2" diagonal cut at the corner. No former ownership marks, no writing on the text pages. Exhibition catalog for the dedicatory show held October 16 through November 20, 1977 at the Tweed Museum of Art, University of Minnesota Duluth, commemorating the opening of the museum's second major addition (financed by the Alice Tweed Tuohy Foundation). The exhibition juxtaposed nineteenth-century American and French treatments of the rural landscape, with loans from the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Paine Art Center and Arboretum, the Walker Art Center, the Hibbing Public Library, and private collections. American painters represented include Thomas Moran (whose "A Summer Squall" appears on the front cover), Albert Bierstadt, Winslow Homer, George Inness, James and William Hart, David Johnson, Alexander Wyant, William Haseltine, and Patrick Vincent Berry; French artists include Corot (whose "Misty Morning" appears on the back cover), Charles Francois Daubigny, Charles-Emile Jacque, Pierre Etienne Theodore Rousseau, Constant Troyon, Henri-Joseph Harpignies, and Felix Ziem.
