Gray's poems were accompanied… by designs by Richard Bentley, whose elaborate ornamental compositions gave the volume an unusually unified character, bringing together poetry, typography and illustration. The original edition is notable for the close relationship between text and image. Bentley's designs frame the poems with architectural, emblematic and rococo elements characteristic of mid-eighteenth-century book illustration, making the volume an important example of the period's decorative approach to the printed book. This Woodbank Press edition includes reproductions of the illustrations first published in the 1753 edition. The Woodbank Press Edition Published by Woodbank Press in a strictly limited edition of 25 copies, this is copy no. 6. The text is set in Monotype Bell, the revival of the typeface cut by Richard Austin for John Bell in the late eighteenth century, and printed on Fabriano Tiepolo, a substantial cotton wove paper. The volume contains the illustrations originally published in the 1753 edition. Each copy is bound by hand in leather with marbled boards, with gilt titles and decoration to the spine and marbled edges, and is housed in a slipcase. The edition sets Bentley's eighteenth-century designs against restrained classical typography and traditional hand binding. Externally, generally smart. Patches of rubbing to the extremities and to the head and tail of spine. Marks to the boards. Small amount of loss to the backstrip due to rubbing. Bumping to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. Occasional light spots. Prior owner's notes to the margins of page 54. Small repair to the tail of the first leaf. Curiously noted as 'designs', rather than poems, the title was written such in order to emphasise to readers that the poems were previously published by Gray, and not new works. Nonetheless, the han…dsome illustrations, of which there are six engraved plates as well as numerous vignettes and embellishments, make for a interesting and attractive collaborative volume. In quarter-calf binding with gilt detailing and paper-covered boards. Externally smart, there is some wear to the backstrip and extremities. Handsomely bound in contemporary morocco-gilt by Clarke & Bedford.Thomas Gray was "a gentleman of his age, who numbered among his private accomplishments the occasional composition of poetry, who wished to share with others only those poems which met his own standards of excellence, and who, except for the two Pindaric odes, was reluctant to see any of them appear in print. Among these was one, perhaps the richest in self-revelationÉ a poem which through many changes of taste has retained its popularity and defined the literary rank of its author. Gray's Elegy is one of the great poems of the English language; to many readers, learned and otherwise, it has stood almost for the idea of poetry itself" (ODNB).
