Professor Roentgen, University of Wurzburg, and his new photography by Roentgen Rays, clearly the precursor to the modern x - ray. Roentgen had announced his discovery only three months previously, on January 4th, 1896. Housed in protective mylar report cover. Scarce.

Whitman article on p. 207 unaffected. The striking engraved cover portrait by Valerian Gribayedoff is uncommon. Gribayedoff was a popular American illustrator and journalist born in Russia and known for his coverage of the Dreyfus affair. His Whitman portrait shows the face and shoulder of the serene-looking poet in a broad-brimmed hat he wears in many other better known portraits. Original and complete issue, very rare Whitman item. One descriptive paragraph describing Walt Whitman in language he often used (could have been written by him). Also printed is a reproduction of Whitman's handwritten lines from "Leaves of Grass".
