In good brown half leather with marbled boards; five horizontal raised bands to spine; two inserted brown title fields with gilt titles. The covers are firm, straight and clean, with sound edges. Evidence of previous repair work done to spine; and front sides of spine cracked, ends a little worn. Very slightly tanned and foxed end papers; gutter areas is worn. Red mottled cut edges, slightly tanned; the top edge has a dark tint. The text block is tightly bound and straight; prelims marked and lightly foxed. The main block of pages is mostly quite clean, but with some marks and foxing. The illustrations by George Cruikshank and H.K. Browne are well preserved, but three from Oliver Twist are loose - opposite pages 50, 82 and 126 and frontispiece is missing though tissue guard remains. A Tale of Two Cities section is in better condition, Overall, quite a good example for age - good condition. No jacket.

Den geschichtlichen Hintergrund und zugleich dramatischen Höhepunkt der Handlung gibt ein Aufstand, der im Juni 1780 in London ausbrach. Damals unterlagen die Katholiken Diskriminierungen, die durch ein Gesetz des Parlaments aufgehoben werden sollten, während Lord George Gordon als Präsident einer Vereinigung wirkte, die sich gegen die Gleichstellung der Katholiken richtete. Durch Gerüchte und unsinnige Behauptungen wurde das Volk aufgewiegelt, und eine Petition sollte im Verein mit einer Demonstration seiner Anhänger das Gesetz verhindern. "Barnaby Rudge" ist der zweiteselbstständige Roman, den Dickens unter dem Obertitel "Meister Humphreys Wanduhr" veröffentlichte. Mit dem ersten Roman "Der Raritätenladen" ist er durch die Rahmenhandlung verbunden. Beide Werke erschienen in Heften 1840 und 1841 in London."
