Augustus Earle (1793-1838) was an artist who painted world-wide leaving a visual legacy from many countries in an age before photography. Such was the quality of his art that he exhibited at the Royal Acadamy in London when aged only 13. He was also a skilled writer and the book's introduction describes him as "probably the first professionally trained freelance travel writer to tour the world." His journeys took him to South America, islands in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, India and Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland, he also sailed on Charles Darwin's "Beagle" expedition. His versitility as an artist saw his art range from landscapes, to portrails, groups and events, to "My Dog Jemmy" and botanical drawings. While most works were watercolours he also used oils, pen, ink and wash. This book was commissioned by the National Library of Australia and is based on the Library's Rex Nan Kivell collection of the artist's works, of which 168 are used in the publication, 16 of them reproduced in colour. The selection includes a large number of early studies of native life in Australia and New Zealand, views of the environment and their natural history. Detail and descriptive notes for each image, covering all places he visited, are mainly taken from Earle's own observations and Jocelyn Hackforth-Jones compiled an introductory section outlining Earle's life and artistic styles, his topographical art, his connection with the Romantic Art Movement, his artistic portrayal of people and the originality factor in his art. The colour reproductions are placed in the introductory section with the b/w images running from page 45 tp page 146, a chronology, notes on paintings from other collections and bibliography taking to total pagination to 157 pages. First edition of 1980 published by Alister Taylor, orange hard covers with gilt spine titles are VG+, colour tone end-papers, a small book plate with former owner name name pasted to half-title verso, text block otherwise NF.
