Garland was a distinguished middle-western writer, recipient of both the Pulitzer Prize and membership in the American Academy. This book chronicles his family's return to the East, with stories of important persons of the day, literary and others, and a partial account of a trip to England with his daughters. Book condition: the top edge is dyed green, the other two edges have darkened somewhat, the bottom edge only very slightly; front cover illustration and the lettering are fresh and have nice color, and cover is quite clean; dj is labeled Grosset & Dunlap ( don't know how this happened?) and is in nice condition except for a circa 2 inch tear in the front panel upper corner.

Pages unmarked and bright throughout considering age, possessing very light age toning and a couple very small smudges to the front few pages. Red and black cloth cover has minor damage near spine that seems to be mostly cosmetic, and gilt lettering on the title and spine. Dustjacket has several 1 cm chips and tears, one larger (2.5 cm by 3 cm, approximately) chip, some scuffing to edges and especially noticeable ones on the back. Front flap of DJ is clipped at both corners, though the original price still remains. DJ protected by mylar. ; 539 pages.
