The spine is slightly concaved at the center and there is a small space between the top edge of the spine and the textblock (to be expected with a heavy 752 page book). The print on the spine is in very good condition. There is a thin crease at the bottom edge of the spine. There is a tiny crease just below the top corner of the front cover. The covers are clean. The cover edges and corners are in good shape, no rubbing. The page edges look good, no conspicuous stains. At the juncture of the front inside cover and front end paper there was a very thin tear in the paper. All the paper present, I put a tiny bit of glue where the paper had split and folded it together. There is a squiggly vertical line there now. The front cover is solidly bound, but if you pull at it from the side there's a little bit of jiggling. The paper at the juncture between the rear inside cover and rear end paper does not have any tears and the binding there is solid. From the first to the last the pages are very solidly bound. They are also exceptionally clean. Scrolling through, I'm not finding any instances soiling. There is a slight bending of the pages at the bottom corners, not enough to create a crease, and the pages do lie flat. I didn't see any conspicuous creasing, no placeholder creases, no turned-down corners. There's a tiny nick at the edge of around ten consecutive pages, no tears, not much of anything. It resulted from a tiny scratch on the middle page edge. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. I have always had it in a fitted protective cover. There is a little bit of edge wear, a few areas of light scuffing. There is a light stain off the bottom edge of the spine. The spine is toned. The flaps are in very solid shape, very clean, no tears. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. From the dust jacket: 'This popular classic (previously translated as The Good Soldier Schweik) has until now been available in English only in a severely abridged and bowdlerized version. This brilliant, new translation has not only restored the third of the text that was cut in the only other English edition, but also has truly rendered the original language and intent of the author. Hasek, writing during World War I, was a popular hero for his flamboyant, daring criticism of war, kings, bureaucracies, secret police, the clergy, the rich, respectable, and self-satisfied. Unfortunately when translated in 1930, Hasek's language was considered too rough for English readers and was therefore toned down; his political, social, and religious views were found to verge on treason and blasphemy, and so were softened; his black humor was considered too outrageous to be funny, and thus, in many cases, was simply omitted.' This book is the most translated novel of Czech literature, having been translated into over 50 languages.
