This growth has largely been driven by the needs of applications both in other sciences and in industry. In Chapter 1, we will give a short overview over some classes of inverse problems of practical interest. Like everything in this book, this overview is far from being complete and quite subjective. As will be shown, inverse problems typically lead to mathematical models that are not well-posed in the sense of Hadamard, i.e., to ill-posed problems. This means especially that their solution is unstable under data perturbations. Numerical meth ods that can cope with this problem are the so-called regularization methods. This book is devoted to the mathematical theory of regularization methods. For linear problems, this theory can be considered to be relatively complete and will be de scribed in Chapters 2 - 8. For nonlinear problems, the theory is so far developed to a much lesser extent. We give an account of some of the currently available results, as far as they might be of lasting value, in Chapters 10 and 11. Although the main emphasis of the book is on a functional analytic treatment in the context of operator equations, we include, for linear problems, also some information on numerical aspects in Chapter 9. This location provides unique opportunities for cooperation between in dustry and a university which derives its name from one of the most eminent ap plied mathematicians of all times. The mathematics department was founded in the late Sixties, the first students graduated in 1974. In these boom times, they had no problems of finding jobs in industry. However, their employers were then more interested in their general training than in their specific mathematical skills. To change this, the department decided to actively seek cooperation with industry in what we called "problem seminars," where students were trained to solve (under guidance) real-world problems from local industry. Groundwork was already laid by a curriculum with special emphasis on numerical analysis, statistics, and optim ization. This work in problem seminars usually evolved into diploma theses. Inci dentally, in all projects presented here, students were involved at some stages. While the original motivation for cooperation with industry was educational, it turned out that most problems presented to us also led to interesting mathematical problems, so that nowadays our motivation is as much scientific as educational. When cooperating with industry, one cannot expect that the problems to be solved fall into one's special mathematical interest. Connective tissue diseases demand study because of their frequency, morbidity and mortality. They present intriguing challenges in the fields of diagnosis, management and research. Their range has now expanded enormously so that no individual can master the whole subject, particularly as this relates to their immunological basis. Immunology of Connective Tissue Diseases has been written by experts who are either clinical or basic scientists. The book presents up-to-date reviews of the immunological basis of connective tissue diseases as it impacts on diagnosis, pathogenetic concepts, disease monitoring and management. The book is aimed at physicians interested in understanding the immunological basis of these diseases, and at immunologists who are either entering this field for the first time and would like to have a convenient state-of-the-art account of its status, or who are researching in one area and would like to acquaint themselves with the developments which have taken place in others.
