Pages are crisp, bright, and clean except for a short gift note on the front endpaper; binding is square and tight, hard cover lightly rubbed at the ends of the cloth spine and showing a small tap and wrinkle at each of the lower free corners and small spots of rubbing along the heel edges and at corners, otherwise quite colorful and lovely. Jacket is unclipped but has an open tear at the spine head, some open chipping at corners and spine heel, and several closed edge tears with creasing between on the front and the back, as well as a little handling soil at spine, foreedges, and heel edges, yet remains overall attractive, now protected in a clear sleeve.

Staple-bound pictorial stiff paper wrappers with minor rubbing along the spine fold, a tiny bit of wear to the tail of spine fold, a tiny corner crease (1/4" x 1/4") to the lower fore edge corner of the front wrapper, rusted staples and minor tearing around the staples making the binding tender for what overall is a lovely copy of the book. 23 pp.; color illustrations + "magic glasses." Rose Celli and Marguerite Reynier retold a dozen fairy tales from Perrault (4), Andersen (2), Grimm (1) and others. These French language tales include: Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, The Puss in Boots and The Sorcerer's Apprentice. The fairy tales are illustrated in blue and red in an angular, art deco style by Russian emigre artist Helene Guertik, but there is a twist. Attached to the inside of the back wrapper is a cellophane envelope containing a SET OF MAGIC GLASSES that have both blue and red lenses that when used obscure either the red parts or the blue parts of the illustrations which in effect, makes two distinct pictures out of each one; internally with one minor stain to title page and offsetting to the final page from the inside of back wrapper. The condition of the book is VERY GOOD +. ONE OF THE RAREST, IF NOT THE MOST RARE, OF ALL THE PERE CASTOR BOOKS.

Authorized American edition of this early large format Père Castor book, featuring striking and stylized Art Deco color lithographs by Russian émigré artist Guertik with dotted lines for children to finish the designs. It was émigré artists like Guertik, Nathalie Parain, Alexandra Exter, Feodor Rojankowsky, and Georges Cherkessof, working with avant-garde Constructivist, Dadaist, and Minimalist art philosophies, that gave the Père Castor books their greatest distinction and gained them long-lasting fame. This book first published by Flammarion in 1934. A nice intact copy. 10.5'' x 9.5''. Original side-stapled color pictorial flexible card wrappers. Illustrated by Guertik in color throughout, with "finishing" images intact and unused. [20] pages. Slight edge wear and soiling to wrappers, top front corner bumped.
